The Ethiopian Orthodox church is one of the oldest in Christendom. Because of the country's isolation it has retained much early symbolism, one of these being the processional cross. This is usually made of cast whitemetal with elaborate latticework. They are attached to the top of staffs on feast days and carried at the heads of parades through local villages, then returned to the chuches which are their home.
